Il Gibson Thunderbird IV debuttò nel 1963 insieme allo storico modello Firebird. Nel 1987 un restyle lo arricchì di una coppia di pickup TB Plus con magneti in ceramica. Il suo "Thunderous" (fragoroso) output è arricchito e sostenuto da un manico a nove strati di mogano e noce con giuntura neck-through.
